FITC | Design & Technology Events FITC Newsletter: San Francisco 2010

10 Reasons you need to be at FITC San Francisco. Including a real sweet discount.

We are so excited about the upcoming event that we decided to put together the top reasons we think you should be there! Here they are…

1. Hang with Passioniate People. Remember when work was fun?

There is nothing as exciting and invigorating as spending 3 days with people who get it, people who love it, and people who are as excited as you. People like our speakers, our attendees, our sponsors, and our volunteers. So come, if for no other reason than to recharge your creative inspirational batteries. Don’t believe us? Check out the FITC Toronto highlight reel!

2. Flash legend and Creator of FFFFOUND, Yugo Nakamura, On Stage For The First Time In 5 years!

He’s one of the biggest names in the interactive design community and he’s only speaking at FITC San Francisco. In his presentation, Yugo will talk about what he has been working on, the ideas that sprung from those works, and what challenges they plan to tackle in the future.

3. Co-Creator Of Processing, Ben Fry

He’ll cover the latest incarnation of the Processing project, which targets Android devices. It’s designed for rapid iteration and to streamline how you develop and prototype. On the other hand, it provides a simple platform for building applications that make use of the affordances of mobile devices–touch input, location and tilt sensors, always-on network access, and portable, high-resolution screens.

4. Adobe Under the Hood Sessions. 12 of them. Straight from the Experts.

With FITC San Francisco being in Adobe’s head office home town, we really wanted to involve Adobe in a cool way, so together with Adobe we put together 12 sessions on a diverse range of topics covering Flex 4, OSMF, Flash CS5, AIR, LCCS, Flash Catalyst, and more.

5. The Influxis Voodoo Lounge. Oh Yeah.

Free Beer. Live DJ. An unconference vibe. Off the beaten path presentations. Interviews. Experiments. Live coding. All streamed live for the world to watch. Only at FITC San Francisco. This is sure to be EPIC!!!!

6. It’s Not Just About Flash

We love Flash, regardless of what Apple says. But we also love other technologies. So we have presentations on a whole wack of topics: HTML5 • Android • FLEX • RIA’s • Robotlegs • Processing • LCCS • Catalyst • HYPE • AIR • Geolocation • Multi-screen • Union • Social Media API’s • OSMF • Away3D • Unity3D • Papervision3D

7. Creator of Se7en title credits, Kyle Cooper

Kyle’s accomplishments include over 150 film title sequences including Se7en, all three Spider-Man films, Across the Universe, Zathura, Dawn of the Dead, Mission: Impossible, Braveheart, Tropic Thunder, The Mummy, The Incredible Hulk, and many more. We’ve spoken to a few insiders who tell us that for Se7en, Kyle locked himself in a room and proceeded to scratch on film pieces for hours. What ended up on screen is actually Kyles blood. Amazing.

8. Touch, Touch, Touch!

FITC San Francisco isn’t just about watching cool shit, it’s also about trying out cool new shit! You can get your hands on the latest cool interactive devices and frameworks like Arduino, the Litl WebBook, Hype Framework, Robot Legs, Android, and tons more.

9. Be A Part Of The First Ever Game Of 600-Player Pong!

This is no joke, programming dynamo Colin Moock will be make the word premiere of a game he’s created using Megaphone and all attendees of FITC San Francisco will be able to join in on the fun.

10. Save Some Cash Money

Yes, we saved the best for last. We know you want to go. And we want to help you get there. So here’s $200 off any ticket. Do it. Discount code: tenreasons

FITC Mobile Social Rolls Into Amsterdam, Sunday, February 21, 2010
On Custom Bikes Created by Anita Fontaine and Geoff Lillemon of Champagne Valentine

Toronto, Canada [February 1, 2010]
–Bikes, technology and culture intersect at The Felix Meritis European Centre for Arts and Sciences, Sunday, February 21, 2010, when FITC Amsterdam and Bike Hugger team-up to present FITC Mobile Social, a group ride that combines community and conversation with artistry on two wheels.

Led by DL Byron on a bike designed by interactive artists Anita Fontaine and Geoff Lillemon of Amsterdam-based Champagne Valentine, FITC Mobile Social will begin at the Felix Meritis at 14:00 hours and end at WorkCycles Jordaan around 17:00 hours.

“Amsterdam is the back drop for the first Mobile Social of 2010 and the kickoff of our meet-ups on bikes,” says Bike Hugger’s DL Byron. “We’re excited about being at FITC and riding the Champagne Valentine bikes!”

“We wanted to make the most psychedelic bike in Amsterdam but we couldn’t decide on one color so we decided to use them all,” says Geoff Lillemon, Creative Director, Champagne Valentine.

FITC commissioned two bicycles from Champagne Valentine based on artwork developed by the duo for this year’s event graphics. Technical execution of the concept was done by Fietskoning. The bikes will be on display at Felix Meritis during the two-day run of FITC Amsterdam, an annual conference for interactive designers and developers.

Champagne Valentine is Anita Fontaine and Geoff Lillemon, interactive directors originally hailing from Australia and the US respectively. They specialize in expanding the digital terrain by combining facets of interactive, new media, motion and gaming to create compelling and technologically advanced works.

They have created bespoke interactive work for clients such as Comedy Central, Diesel, vh1, T-mobile, Scion XB, and (RED). As internationally recognized new media artists they also exhibit their works, developing custom installations and applications for galleries like the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City and the Gallery of Modern Art in Australia. They live and work in Amsterdam.

DL Byron is the publisher of bikehugger.com and the Principal of Textura Design, Inc an agency that specializes in creative and interesting approaches to social media. He’s a full-time blogger, inventor of the consumer product Clip-n-Seal, and coauthor of Publish & Prosper: Blogging for Your Business, a New Riders book.
